What is LARP?
LARP stands for Live Action Role Play. It is a type of game where you play with other people, each inhabit a character, and act out situations in live-action. This is a broad definition: LARP can be any genre of story, can have different types and amount of rules, and is more a way to tell a story than a type of story to tell, just like you can have video games that are horror or fantasy.
Is LARP like DnD?
A little bit! DnD (Dungeons and Dragons) is a TTRPG (table-top role playing game), which is a type of game similar to LARP in that they both ask player to inhabit a role (role-playing) in order to tell a story in a game. The biggest difference is, in DnD and similar TTRPGs, a lot of the action is decided through rolling dice, and letting the numbers you roll tell the story. In LARP, the action all live! So, to see if your sword hits the monster you’re fighting, in DnD you would roll dice, but in LARP you would swing an actual sword and see if it actually makes contact with the monster!
What type of LARP is Portal to Ferrum?
Portal to Ferrum is a high-fantasy LARP that includes player-generated characters (PCs) and boffer (foam) weapon combat. We take a lot of inspiration from DnD in terms of the feel and tone of our world, but the rules and setting for our game are original creations. Our setting is very swords-and-sorcery, full of orcs and rogue wizards and taverns, and our structure is very quest-forward.
